“You sailed all the way out there?” The little girl stretched up on her tip toes to see over the wall, searching the horizon for the distant lands her father had returned from.
“Even further.  We sailed until Dol Amroth was just a speck on the horizon, and then we kept sailing.  Past mountains and old crumbling towers, and rivers that, had we followed them, would take us all the way to hidden valleys where elves live.”
Rose’s eyes widened.  “Elves?”  She turned her gaze from the ocean to her father, as he nodded sagely.  “What about dwarves?  Were there dwarves too?”
“I met some dwarves.”  Ercdryt struggled to suppress a grin as his daughter stared up at him in awe.
“What were they like?”
“Short.  And… hairy.”
When he left Dol Amroth, she was still a babe, quiet and sweet tempered.  The little girl he’d found playing in the streets, hardly distinguishable as a girl from the group of boys she tagged along with, had been a stranger to him.  If it weren’t for the grey doe eyes that met his now, the same eyes as her mother, he might not have known her.
But she had grown up on tales of her father, and knew the man who rode up to her on the street, as if he’d been absent only days.  He’d taken her around the city, perched in front of him in the saddle, and she’d shown him all the spots where she liked to play.  Ercdryt had wondered at the change the years had brought in the girl, and she couldn’t help but remind him of his own youth, playing knights and corsairs and dreaming about distant lands.
“When I’m older, I’m going to sail far away too,” Rose went on, while her father smiled down at here.  “And captain my own ship just like yours.  And fight the corsairs, and see mountains and dwarves everything.”
